Parks Canada is undertaking a rehabilitation of the Brass Point Bridge that connects the South Frontenac side of Burnt Hills Road to the Kingston side. This is being done for public safety reasons as the bridge has reached the end of its useful life. The rehabilitation will affect both the swing bridge portion and the fixed portion. The project is scheduled to start in October 2025, with the onsite construction taking place through 2026 and 2027, and a site restoration in spring 2028. Because this is a Parks Canada operation, their concern is with maintaining the navigable waterway on this designated Unesco World Heritage site for the duration of the project. They have no such concern for vehicular traffic and the bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic for the duration of the project starting in March 2026 for a 2 year time frame (described by Parks Canada as a worst case scenario). Parks Canada has incorporated some processes to mitigate the impact of the extended closure (designating a detour route, temporary pedestrian crossing, coordination with emergency responder and engaging with municipal partners and service providers to reduce disruptions wherever possible).
The DCLA Board has written a letter to Parks Canada and received a response, (both are provided below) Parks Canada also made available the Basic Impact Assessment of the Bridges project, also copied below, with more project specific details.
If and when future communications related to this project become available, they will be posted on this page.
